Updated; 2020: We have made some changes to this article. After another year of extensive research on small business ideas in Nigeria, we’ve come up with more small business ideas in Nigeria; you can consider starting. They are all lucrative businesses in Nigeria if properly managed.

Across the world, people are looking for small business they can do to meet up with their daily growing spending. With the world’s fast-rising rate of unemployment, it has become paramount that every unemployed youth starts a business no matter how small the business might be at the starting point.

According to McKinsey’s report in this year’s World Economic Forum held in Davos in which youth unemployment took centre stage; the report carries it that youth unemployment is growing in uncomfortable proportion. In India, which has one of the largest populations of young people in the world, 75 million youth are unemployed and more than 1 million people are added to the workforce each day. In Saudi Arabia, 70 per cent of the population is under the age of 30 and they are not finding jobs.

In Nigeria, youth unemployment is as high as 50%. The number keeps increasing in a geometric sequence. 75 per cent of university professors believe they are adequately preparing their students for the workforce. Conversely, only 40 per cent of employers take the same view.

In most cases, it is not that those unemployed entrepreneurs are not willing to start a business but their problem lies in finding the best business ideas to do with little capital they have.  So, if you are one of those that have little amount of money like 1 million, 500000, one hundred thousand naira (N100000), eight thousand naira (N80000), sixty thousand naira (N60000), fifty thousand naira (N50000), forty thousand naira (N40000), twenty thousand naira (N20000), even ten thousand naira (N10000) and the zeal to do business is in you; I have below a list of businesses you can start with such amount of.

Even if you don’t want to kick start immediately, you can prepare yourself to begin any of these businesses in 2020 or in the year to come. However, be aware that delay is dangerous; the earlier the better.

What do you require to succeed in any of the business?

  • Your best brain
  • Right mindset
  • Passion
  • Dedication
  • Skills where necessary

      1. Hello ademola sunday moses,
Hahahaha, I am lost but found. Well, I’m glad you found this write-up very helpful. We are doing more research on things like this and I encourage you to keep visiting. All the best!

      1. We have a well package business plan for phone accessories and spare parts business. A typical case study from Lagos Nigeria. Just at a giveaway price; N4500. If you need it, let me know.

    26. This is really great and I commend your findings (Onwuka). but to me, to start all this business seems to be easy but the location of the business is a greater challenge. why? cos to rent a space probably a shop now, you need nothing less than 200k and that depends on the kind of area one needs but it is always advisable to get such space in a metropolis. now, if I have 300k and I rent a shop with 250k, I will have 50k left, what kind of wares will I sell in that kind of shop that will help me to cater for my ceaseless demands? please shed more light… adeloye_peter@yahoo.com

      1. Hello Tyoapine Msughter Bartholomew,
        there are few things you need to know;
        1. fear is the greatest enemy of success.
        2. try to visit others that are already into the business that you want to start. That will help you know you are not alone in the business.
        3. start small.
        4. believe in yourself and that you will make it, big time.

    28. Thank you so much for your post!!! It was very insightful!! Please I need help on how to start mini importation business, all the websites, I am encountering, keeps asking for a small token!!

      1. Hello Sharon,
Buy a space in an outskirts and construct a piggery farm. If you have an existing space, you can use it. To start, ask in your locality to find out if there are those who are already in the business. Ask them what the business is like in your locality, this gives you an edge.

    29. thanks for this wonderful post, its educative. I like the bussiness idea i read in this post, but one things i notice in me is that, i dont like sitting in one place, i like to move here and there in short travelling is my hobbies. And i just graduate from University and am planning to start a transport business, pls, i will need your advice on this, or any business i can do.? Thanks.

      1. Hello Oyedokun Femi A.,
The question I want to ask you is this “do you have capital to start a transport business?” Any business you are going to start now will be determine by your capital. So, it is good you state how much you have for the business.

    30. Am interested in importation business I need a secure company I can import from in China and America here is my mail box address here.desmondsteve60@yahoo. com

    31. Hello, pls am a university student and I desire to do something with my little capital….pls help me on dat snail rearing aspect…. is it nt stressful enough to affect accademic activities

      1. Hello Adejoke,

That will be a nice business for you.
        For your Business Success Tips
I advice you developed a business plan for it; go for market survey first depending on how you wish to start up the business. Chose a good location and order you products. You can chose to order your product online and sell online or buy and sell offline and online. To build large customer base, you can embark on promotional activities and run some forms of advertisement.

If there is anyway you want us to be of help like in advertising your business, we are readily available.

    33. Very interesting and educative but with regard to the records of kano population You cited that is wrong because kano has over ten million inhabitants if not even more populous than Lagos.

      1. Mustapha you are right. I don’t think Emma had ever visited Kano before now. Lets do some little Arithmetic and take a place called Brigade (in Fagge local govt council) that coprises kwana jaba Ahmadiya,Kwana hudu,Tudun wada,Layin Famfo to name few can at least have a population of over 3million inhabitants. Even the Igbo people ofSabon Gari alone can have make more than 100,000 people.Talkless of the old city itself and a total number of 44 local governments in the state. In the past 30 years Kano have more than 3 million in habitants. As small as Zamfara it got more than 3 million people. Mr Emmanuel your source of statistic is wrong. Use your head that Kano is the 3rd largest city in Africa. Even the Ibadan population I doubt that its correct.

        1. Hello Ahmed,
I listed the source of the population statistics in the article and it is subject to verification. It can be amend it to yours, if your source is more valid and verifiable.
          Thank you for your contributions!

    34. Good write-up i must say but if one is to go into the mini business centre there are some things that should also be considered; the cost of where you going to use (i am in Abuja), it will definitely be a side business for me because i work in an organisation from 8am-4pm so means i will need to employ someone i can trust to be in charge during those hours. In that case we are already talking above 100,000 here.

      1. Hello Susan,
Maybe that would a topic of another day. Sure, I will definitely give details of what is currently obtain if you intend going into mini importation business.

      1. AM INTERESTED IN THAT MINI IMPORTATION. HOW DO I GO ABOUT IT? I ALSO NEED YOUR HELP IN TERMS OF YOUR ADVICE. CAN YOU PLEASE SEND ME A MESSAGE TO MY BOX OR SEND YOUR PHONE NUMBER TO ME TO GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU. THANKS

      2. I read your post with keen interest, yes, its really attainable to start all the businesses you mentioned with less than N100,000. But then u discovered that the N100,000 would be your capital, there is a day-to-day expense incurred in whatever business one may want to get in to, hence there is need to have some more cash to keep the business running especially in the early stages. Did you mention in your analysis that Abuja is more populated than Port-Harcourt? I’m shocked!

        1. You’re right, Raphael. Although in some of the businesses above, one hundred thousand naira (N100, 000) would be able to start the business and also cater for the early expenses in running the business.
I know this might shock many people; Abuja is more populated than PH, the figures are out there.

          1. Pls ,I want to have a garri store, how can I make it lucrative as a graduate because people believed is an illiterate business

            1. Hello Aderinsola,
              1. Search for those who are already in the poultry business around your locality.
              2. Get information from them concerning their challenges and strength in the business.
              3. Read more about poultry business from internet and agricultural business textbooks.
              4. Go for a market survey.
              5. Rent a Space if you don’t have one.
              6. Seek the advice of a Veterinary doctor.
              7. Kick start the business by either buying a day-old chicken or 2-weeks breed chicken.
You can start with either Layers or Boilers depending on your capital and the available space.

          2. It is impossible to start a beer parlour business with 100k. Is that one for the shop rent, to buy chairs and table, to buy fridge, generator, tumblers, fan, flat screen TV or for what? Fear God o.

            1. Hello Papilo,
we presumed that you have things like space or shop, chairs and table, fridge, generator, tumblers, fan, flat screen TV. The 100k is for buying beer, preparing things like pepper soup, and other eat-able.
