How to Check if your National ID card is ready

1. Visit the official website of NIMC for checking National ID Card status, https://touch.nimc.gov.ng/
2. Once on the page, click on the “Proceed” button.
3. Enter your First name, Last Name and last 6 digits of your National Identification Number in the column provided.
4. Finally, click on the “Check Now” button to see the status of your National ID Card. This is how to check if your National Identity Card is ready in Nigeria.

Note: You can easily locate your National Identification Number (NIN) on your NIN slip. If you can’t locate your NIN slip. You can check your NIN using USSD code on your phone following this procedure.

Once, you check and your national id card is ready for pick up; visit your enrollment centre where it has been sent for Activation Centre to collect it.

How to check your NIN using code on your phone

After you’ve enrolled for National Identity card, you can get your NIN by dialing *346# from the phone number associated with your voter’s card, drivers license, or BVN registration.

• Navigate to mobile phone’s dial button and dial *346#
• Type 1 (National Identification Number retrieval) from phone number associated with your national ID card registration or NIMC.
• Your NIN will be displayed on your mobile phone’s screen immediately. That’s all!

Just be sure you have at least ₦20 airtime on your phone network line before dialing the code. You can either write or take a screenshot when the NIN is displayed on the screen as it will not be displayed more than once.

At the moment, the USSD code only works on Airtel, MTN, and Glo networks; the service is yet to be available on the 9mobile network.

1.   What will I do if my National ID card is ready?

If your ID card is ready, Congratulations!  The next step you’ll take will be to visit your registration centre for your National ID card collection. If perhaps you no longer live close that enrollment centre, visit nearest NIMC headquarter for national ID card enrollment close to you and request for a transfer. To request for a transfer, you need your National Identification Number. So, go with your NIMC National Identification number slip. There are no charges for transfer at present. All you need to do is to fill correctly the card transfer form given to you to fill by the NIMC staff on the seat. When filling the form ask questions if you don’t understand anything on the form

2.   What will I do if my National ID card is not ready?

If however, you received a notification that your card is not ready. First, you have to cross-check again. Check your entry second time to be sure you made no mistake in any of your name(s) or National Identification Number. If after that you still received a notification that your national ID card isn’t ready, then it really isn’t available. Wait patiently and try again some other time. You’re not to enroll twice for National Identity card, as it is considered a criminal offence to do by NIMC.

3.   How long does it take to get a National ID card in Nigeria?

Once, you enroll for the National ID Card in Nigeria, It may take few months to receive the permanent National ID card. Sometimes, it takes years. No need to worry, your NIN slip can be use in place of your national id card.

4.   Why does it take so long to get my National ID card?

It usually takes long time sometimes to get National ID card due logistics problem. If you have applied for National ID card from last year downwards, visit your NIMC registration centre to get your permanent National ID card.
