In 2016, I reviewed the latest cheapest data plan in Nigeria. This year, I dimes it necessary to do so. Android devices, PCs and smart phones consume heavy data bundles. There is no doubt that you’ve been spending heavily on data plans surfing the internet these days. So, it is good you get to know the available and cheapest data plans from all Networks in Nigeria.

There are currently 4 notable telecommunication Networks in Nigeria. These are MTN, Glo, 9mobile and AIRTEL. Today, I will review all data plans currently available from these 4 major telecommunication Networks in Nigeria.  The essence is to help you reduce the money you spend on purchasing data plans as you get the best value for your money.

The Good news is that MTN, GLO, 9mobile and AIRTEL continually roll out new data plans  in addition to their old data plans.  However, my interest in this article is on the cheapest data plan in Nigeria 2018.  Please, note that weekly bundles are not included in this article. So, let’s get to compare and contrast all the telecommunication data plans currently available in Nigeria and then pull out the cheapest data plan among them. At the end of this write-up, you will know the cheapest data plan in Nigeria which can you subscribe to.

Cheapest data plan in Nigeria 2018

Let’s start with MTN Data plans;

MTN Data plans, Prices ,  Subscription Code and Validity period

• 1GB + 500MB = ₦1000 (500MB Bonus for night browsing). Subscription code – text 106 to 131. Validity is 30days
• 5GB = ₦1200. To subscribe, text 130 to 131, to activate the plan. Validity is 30days
• 5GB + 1GB = ₦2000 (1GB Bonus for night browsing). To subscribe for this plan, text 110 to 131. Validity is 30days
• 5GB = ₦3500. To subscribe for this data plan, send 107 to 131. Validity is 30days
• 10GB data plan = ₦5000. To activate this plan, send 116 to 131. Validity is 30days

The above five monthly data plans from MTN are the best for all normal and regular users.

OTHER MTN DATA PLANS

22GB data plan = ₦10000. To activate this plan, send 117 to 131.  Validity is 30days.

50GB data plan = ₦20000. To activate this plan, send 118 to 131.  Validity is 60days.

85GB data plan = ₦50000. To activate this plan, send 133 to 131.  Validity is 90days

The above 22GB, 50GB and 85GB data plans can cater for heavy and occasional data users.

For smaller data plan users, 1.5GB, 1GB + 500MB and 2.5GB + 1GB monthly data plans from MTN is the best option for them as they are cheapest when compare to other networks in Nigeria that offer similar data plans.

Browsing speed – MTN browsing signal strength is ok but occasional not stable. Depending on your location, you can browse at 3G, Edge or HSPA signal strength.

9mobile Data plans, Prices, Subscription Codes and Validity period

• 1GB night only plan= ₦200. To subscribe for this data plan, simply dial *229*3*11#. Validity is 1day
• 2GB evening (7pm -7am) and weekend only plan = ₦1,000 Naira. Dial *229*3*12# to subscribe. Validity is 30day
• 5GB evening (7pm -7am) and weekend only plan = ₦2,000 Naira. To subscribe for this data plan, dial *229*3*13#. Validity is 30day
• 1GB = ₦1000. To subscribe for this data plan, dial *229*2*7#. Validity is 30day.
• 5GB = ₦1200. To subscribe for this data plan, dial *229*2*25#. Validity is 30day.
• 5GB = ₦2000. To subscribe for this data plan, dial *229*2*8#. Validity is 30day.
• 4GB = ₦3000. To subscribe for this data plan, dial *229*2*36#. Validity is 30day.

9mobile browsing speed – 9mobile network have fast and stable even in remote places in Nigeria especially when browsing at 3G or HSPA/HSPA+. However, 9mobile currently wipe-out customers’ data plan without customer due usage. I receive this complaint from several 9mobile customers

• 5GB = ₦ To activate this data plan, dial *435*1#. Validity is 30day (Android 2.5).
• 7GB = ₦ To activate this data plan, dial *438#. Validity is 30day (Android 3.5).
• 9GB = ₦ To activate this data plan, dial *435#. Validity is 30day (Android 4.0)
• 3GB = ₦ To activate this data plan, dial *431#. Validity is 30day (Blackberry)
• 10GB = ₦ Dial *452# to subscribe. Validity is 30day.
• From above, you can see that Airtel also has many data plans for normal and regular users.

OTHER AIRTEL DATA PLANS

• 50GB = ₦36000. Simply, dial *406# to subscribe to this plan. Validity is 180day
• 100GB = ₦70000. To subscribe, dial *407#. Validity is 365day.
• 200GB = ₦136000. To subscribe, dial *408#. Validity is 365day.

For SMEs and very heavy data users, the above “other airtel data plans” may be their best options.

Airtel browsing speed – Airtel’s network speed from my own experience is not quite commendable. Although, this depends largely on your location as they are still battling to maintain the stability of their 3G.

For normal and regular data users, Glo monthly data plans is comparatively similar to Airtel data plan.

In terms of browsing speed, Glo Network is NOT commendable as you may likely have challenges in their network browsing speed. In some town, it is difficult to browse with Glo Network even at the face of their 3G, HSPA or HSPA+ Network.  Many people have criticized Glo browsing speed.

Summary and comparison of the current Data plans in Nigeria

For ₦1,000 data plan in Nigeria;

• MTN gives 1.5GB (1GB + 500MB bonus use at night), Validity period is 30days
• 9mobile gives 1GB, Validity period is 30days.
• Glo gives 4GB, Validity period 30days.
• Airtel gives 1GB, Validity period 30days.

For ₦1,200 Naira data plan in Nigeria

• MTN gives 1.5GB, Validity period 30days.
• 9mobile Network gives 1.5GB, Validity period is 30days.

Airtel and glo does not offer such data plan.

For ₦2,000 Naira data plan in Nigeria

For ₦2,500 Naira data plan in Nigeria

• Glo gives 12.5 GB, validity period 30 days.
• Airtel gives 5GB, valid for 30 days (android users)

Conclusion: from the analysis above; the cheapest data plan in Nigeria is 4GB for ₦1000, valid for 30days from Glo Nigeria. This is for normal and regular data users.

But wait! Did I say glo Nigeria offers the cheapest data plan in Nigeria? Yes, I think I did. Prove me wrong, if I am not correct.
