Abuja is the capital of Nigeria. It was created in 1976 and it lies the central part of Nigeria. The FCT is the federal capital territory of Abuja and borders on the north with Kaduna State, on the south-west by Kogi State, on south-east with Nassarawa State, and on the west by Niger state. The city is roughly 300 miles (480 km) northeast of Lagos, the former capital.  The total size is 1,769 km².

How did Abuja get its name?

Abuja got its name from King Abubakar, the founder of the kingdom of Abuja. The land now known as Abuja was historically the south-western part of the ancient Habe (Hausa) kingdom of Zazzau (Zaria). King Abubakar succeeded his father as the king of the kingdom. King Abubakar’s nickname is Abu and because he is fair in complexion, “Ja” which means fair or red in Hausa was added to his nickname to become Abu-Ja. So, the present day, Abuja was named after King Abubakar’s nickname, ABU-JA. Though, some other sources have it that the “Ja” is a shortened form of Ishaku Jatau, King Abubakar father’s name.

Abuja is geography mapped out by Aso Rock, a 400-metre (1,300 ft) monolith left by water erosion. The Presidential Villa, Supreme Court, National Assembly, and most parts of the city extend to the south of the rock. Abuja settled in 1828, incorporated on 1st October 1984 and declared capital 12 December 1991

Who built Abuja?

General Murtala Mohammed in 1976 made the decision to move to Abuja. However, the construction of Abuja kicks off in the late 1970s but, due to economic and political unrest, the first stages of the city were not completed until the late 1980s.
